Refresh Colombo – July Meetup

Posted on August 19th, 2010 09:43:10

Refresh Colombo recently concluded its second iteration successfully at the Sri Lanka Chamber of Commerce Auditorium. The tech event, held on 29th July 2010, is the first of its kind geared at enlightening the tech community in Sri Lanka. This completely free event is aimed at sharing the latest developments in the world of information and communication technology among the large number of industry professionals.

Refresh Colombo July edition attracted over fifty ICT professionals and the following three speakers delivered speeches.

  • Web 2.0 and its implications for marketers
    Suranga Priyashantha (eMarketing Specialist)
  • Taking FOSS to the schools
    Suchetha Wijenayake (Professional Geek)
  • Gadget Session : Android Phones
Buddhika Siddhisena (FOSS Evangelist & Gadget Guru)

The first speaker for the day was Bud who in no uncertain terms expressed his love for all things Linux. As were most of the crowd, Bud is a great gadget lover and he showed off his piece of ‘Linux gone Mobile’ Android one for the amusement of the entire crowd. What’s more, he had an Apple iPhone 3GS to compare the Android One with. Come any day, the Android One can beat the Apple 3GS, the best Apple phone before the Apple iPhone 4G (with its funny antenna issue of course.)

Next up was Suranga who made a very informative and knowledgeable presentation on web 2.0 and its implications that most of the techies were not familiar with. Most of the things he shared with the crowd were top notch with a hint of great humor and cool infographics to boot. It was really an awesome presentation given the fact that most of the techies are not too familiar with seeing things from the marketing perspective.

The last presentation was done by Suchetha, garbed in a suitable Darth Vader T-shirt. It was a lively session where Suchetha shared his experience in taking FOSS to the schools. The FOSS community in Sri Lanka is indebted to what the man has done in the four corners of Sri Lanka. It was one-of-a-kind experience listening to Suchetha ranting on his ‘FOSS gone to school’ days. What’s more, he invited the crowd to let him know of any FOSS events being organized so that he can drop in and have a ball. He’s available at http://www.facebook.com/suchetha
